Scuba diving safety concerning equipment and gear is best left
to the professionals to explain at dive classes. But there are
some other, external safety tips that shouldn’t be overlooked
on any dive.
Scuba diving safety includes:
• Taking lessons and getting certified
• Making sure all equipment works and fits before a dive,
especially if you are borrowing or renting gear
• Get a medical exam before learning to dive to make sure
there are no internal reasons with your body that might be unsafe
in dive conditions
• Never dive by yourself. Always use the buddy system.
• Do not dive in environments for which you are not trained
such as caves, ice, and shipwrecks
• Always obey the safety rules set forth by the leader of
any dive
Other good scuba diving safety includes knowing the signs and
symptoms of dehydration, hypothermia, and heat exhaustion. First,
know how to take of yourself so you, personally, are not at risk.
Second, know emergency procedures to take if someone you’re
diving with begins to exhibit any of the signs of their body shutting
down due to the environment.
